First, a radio show which ran from 1939 until 1954, Mr. District Attorney was broadcast as a television show for a season in the early 50s, and as this comic book series. The character never had a name during the radio show but in the short-lived television show, he was Paul Garrett. The show was inspired by the courageous career of District Attorney Thomas Dewey of New York (1902-1971). Mr. District Attorney later became Governor and twice ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the United States, in 1944 and 1948. The radio show always started off with the deep, melodramatic Voice of Law and the words: "Mr. District Attorney: champion of the people, defender of truths, guardian of our fundamental rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
