Apportionment Definition:

The division and distribution of something into proportionate parts; to each according to their share.

For example, if a court ordered apportionment of a contract, the party would be required to perform only to a extent equal to the performance of the other side.

The act of dividing and partitioning for the purposes of allocation or distribution.

Also to allocate and distribute proportionately.

In the context of political boundaries:

"(A)pportionment means the allocation of congressional districts among units entitled to representation."1

In the context of workers compensation and tort liability:

"Apportionment is the process employed ... to segregate the residuals of an industrial injury from those attributable to other industrial injuries, or to nonindustrial factors, in order to fairly allocate the legal responsibility."2
