Crimen Omnia Ex Se Nata Vitiat

Latin: property obtained by crime is tainted (vitiated).

Latin maxim retained from Roman law and now part of civil law as well as common law.

The principle, related to commodum ex injuria sua nemo habere debet, can also be expressed as:

  • Crime vitiates everything which springs from it,
  • A crime vitiates all things proceeding from it,
  • Crime taints all that springs from it, or
  • Crime vitiates everything born of it.

Many governments have enacted statutes that allow the court to trace any profit from crime back to the crime from which it sprung and thus susceptible to seizure by the state.
