A crime scene investigator applying science to the recognition, documentation, collection, preservation, and interpretation of physical evidence.

Criminalists use scientific methods and techniques to find, interpret and preserve physical evidence including blood, fingerprints, DNA and ballistics.

These forensic scientists apply the principles of physical and natural sciences to identify analyze and preserve evidence at a crime scene.

The criminalist is later called upon to report as to his or her findings in a Court of law.

Criminalists testify as to the "caliber and type of firearm used in a crime, trace evidence and DNA."
