Culpa Lata

Latin: gross negligence.

It is more than just simple negligence and includes any action or an omission in reckless disregard of the consequences to the safety or property of another.

A term with Roman and civil law origins with limited application in common law jurisdictions. The full civil law doctrine is culpa lata dolo aequiparatur: gross negligence is equivalent to an intentional tort (source: Jowitt).
