Dance Hall Definition:

A public hall devoted to dancing and for which admission is not based on personal selection or invitation.

A legal definition of dance hall has been required to establish liability under various by-laws especially those related to zoning or taxation.

A private dance studio maintained for the teaching of dance to children was held to not be a dance hall (Kinney).

In one 1925 Montana case, a dance hall was defined as a place for "promiscuous and public dancing".1
