Khula Definition:

Muslim law: a divorce on the wife's initiative and upon payment of an agreed amount to the husband.

Also spelled khul’.

Verma defines a khula as:

“A divorce may be made with the consent and at the instance of the wife if she gives or agrees to give any consideration to the husband for her release from the marriage tie....

"Such divorce is called khula.

“In law, it is the laying down by the husband of his right and authority over his wife for an exchange. Khula has the authority of the Koran.”

Pearl defines khul’ as:

“A consensual divorce, the wife usually providing compensation to the husband in return for her release (from the marriage).”
