Relating to marriage; rights pertaining to marriage or to the state of being married.
A matrimonial home refers to the home of two person in wedlock.
A matrimonial debt, matrimonial asset or matrimonial property all refer to property the title of which has been affected by marriage.
Historically, at common law, there were causes of action called matrimonial causes, because they gave a litigant a claim to damages in relation marriage. Divorce and marriage annulment are matriminial causes of action, as was jactication.
In Re Legal Profession Act, judge Meiklem adopted these words:
"... of or pertaining to matrimony or the estate of marriage. The rite of marriage.... The state of being married.”
