Mestizo Definition:

A descendant from European and aboriginal parents.

Related Terms: Mulatto, Indian, Miscegenation, Mixed Blood

A term of law used in the era of slavery in the United Staes; the equivalent of what is known in Canadian law as Métis.

Also taken to mean a person of part Spanish blood and part Indian.

Also spelled as mustee or mustizo and in the plural sense, mustizoes.

Used to prohibit interracial marriage (miscegenation).

According to the 1740 Slave Code of South Carolina, any person who was Negro, Indian, mulatto or mustizo was presumed to be a slave unless he or she could prove that they were free.
