Toxicologist Definition:

An expert in the science of toxicology, the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical or biological agents such as drugs or poisons.

The International Union of Toxicologists defines toxicology as:

"Scientific discipline involving the study of the actual or potential danger presented by the harmful effects of substances (poisons) on living organisms and ecosystems, of the relationship of such harmful effects to exposure, and of the mechanisms of action, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of intoxications."

As an expert witness, toxicologists are useful in a wide gamut of judicial hearings. In breathalyzer cases, they can give evidence as to the effect of consumption of a given quantity of alcohol on an individual.
