Crazy Laws - American Style - The Sequel!

This is the much-requested sequel to Crazy laws - American Style (the original).

Again, all fully researched - see exact references below.

CHILD FOR SALE

In Washington, certain buying and selling of children is perfectly legal:

"(1) It is unlawful for any person to sell or purchase a minor child. (2) A transaction shall not be a purchase or sale under subsection (1) of this section if any of the following exists: (a) The transaction is between the parents of the minor child...."

SEX WITH BIRDS? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!

In Minnesota where ... you can never be too careful, the legislature thought to prohibit this:

"Whoever carnally knows a ... bird is guilty of bestiality, which is  a misdemeanor. If knowingly done in the presence of another the person may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than one year or to payment of a fine of not more than $3,000 or both."

WHERE'S YOUR PERMIT?!

In South Carolina, too many people have taken to the sewer to pass time on a beautiful sunny day so....

"... no person ... shall enter any public sewer without a special written permit.... Every person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, be subject to a fine not to exceed one hundred dollars or imprisonment for thirty days."

reptile STUPIDITY 101

In North Carolina, the legislators felt it necessary to state the obvious although, frankly, if you can read you can likely think:

"It shall be unlawful for any person to intentionally handle any reptile of a poisonous nature whose venom is not removed, by taking or holding such reptile in bare hands or by placing or holding such reptile against any exposed part of the human anatomy, or by placing their own or another's hand or any other part of the human anatomy in or near any box, cage, or other container wherein such reptile is known or suspected to be."

YOU CAN STAY, BUT NO SEX

In North Carolina, you'd better be careful what you do in a hotel room:

"Any man and woman found occupying the same bedroom in any hotel, public inn or boardinghouse for any immoral purpose ... shall be deemed guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor."

BUT ... BUT ... BUT ...

In South Carolina, at first glance, the situation seems desperate:

"Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year or by both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court."

... except that 'fornication' is defined as sex between unmarried persons. Wait a minute! That doesn't make it any better!

SEDUCE AND DEBAUCH

There's some serious gender discrimination goin' on in Michigan where the law is very one-sided:

"Any man who shall seduce and debauch any unmarried woman shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 5 years or by fine of not more than 2,500 dollars; but no prosecution shall be commenced under this section after 1 year from the time of committing the offense."

FOUL-MOUTH EMBALMERS

In Nevada, the government wishes to make every effort to ensure a smooth transition to Heaven, by prohibiting the following conduct by a funeral home employee:

"Using profane, indecent or obscene language in the presence of a dead human body .... whose body has not yet been interred or otherwise disposed of."

IT DON'T MATTER NONE! GIVE IT TO 'EM ANYHOW!

In Oklahoma, if you are involved in a fatal car accident, you have to give your name and address to the dead person:

"The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to or death of any person or damage to any vehicle which is driven or attended by any person shall give his correct name, address and registration number of the vehicle he is driving, and shall upon request exhibit his driver license and his security verification form ... to the person struck..."

Trial, for the layperson (read "non-lawyer") is a source of tremendous stress and nervousness. You rarely see standing-room only line-ups at the public galleries of the Courthouse. But for lawyers, they are masochistic labours of love; a chunk of time where the stress is through the roof but so, too, is the intensity.
