Sophe, The Slave Singer

  • Object type: Sculpture
  • Formal Title: A slave-singer named Sophe
  • Creator: unknown
  • Date Created: 100 BC
  • Origin: Rome
  • Current Location: Rome, Italy

The Roman’s weren’t shy about subjugating others as slaves, those captured in wars or born to existing slaves.

One Roman writer - Slavos - suggested that up to 10,000 were sold each day in Rome, resulting in slaves for specific tasks in the owner’s household.

The object of this tomb was a slave/singer, Sophe. She would of performed in private functions for her owner and his guests.

The rich liked to boast of their opulence by providing burials for their slaves ... such as Sophe. The very fact that she was given a tombstone was remarkable and a clear mark of respect from a grateful owner.
