Duhaime's Law Dictionary

Legal Citation Definition:

An acronym or abbreviation for a law report or other regular or periodic law or legal and authoritative publication directing a reader to the full document.

Related Terms: Law Report, Neutral Citation, Public Domain Citation, Law Journal

Formal abbreviations accepted by the legal profession, judges and lawyers, in lieu of long hand transcription of the full title of judgments published in collections known as law reports, or such other authoritative legal publication.

For example, rather than spell out the full name of the multi-volume English set of older law reports from English courts, known as English Reports, the commonly accepted legal citation of E.R. is used.

The legal citation is often simply referred to as a cite as in "... the cite for the 1993 United States Supreme Court decision in Conroy v Aniskoff is 507 U.S. 511 (1993)".
